Paletta - Color Your Day App

Project Goal

It was an independent project of mine, that the main purpose of it was to make an average smartphone user into an artist.

As an avid photographer, I caught myself asking time and again - how come there is no option to extract my photos into individual color palettes?

It is so basic, right?

Sometimes that is exactly the thing that catches our eye and our minds - the colors. Not just the landscape or an object.

I wanted to give the user the option to enjoy this photos, which he captures with his phone, in a whole different way.

The app suggests an experience of creating a unique and personal library of color platters - just like a real painter has.

In fact, it invites the user to take at least one picture or video a day and update his private library with a new palette.

User Segmentation

It was all around technographic segmentation - based on preferred technologies, software, and mobile devices.

The only requirements  were a mobile device with a camera, and some motivation to look around and take pictures.

This app was really meant to be a tool that could serve everyone, everywhere, anytime of the day.

The process

Given the fact it was an independent project, and I was my own boss, the work process was quite simple and well planned.

I started with a basic competitor survey and tried to figure out if app of this nature has a real market demand.

I also did a user survey and even built some optional personas that can benefit from such an interface.

The process involved a huge amount of manual scribbles, and examination of dozens of photos I took myself, to understand how much 'meat' we actually have here.

Main Challenges

The challenges were divided between logistical and economic aspects.
On the logistical side, the challenge was to make sure the camera the user posses is good enough and sharp enough to deliver optimal results. My market test showed that there are still mobile devices with very poor cameras that will not really do the job as I planned.
On the financial side - I was trying to figure out how to make the app into something that might also make a profit in the future.

How can I take this to the next level?

What users can actually do with their private colors collections?

I considered an option of social sharing, facing the challenge to create a Pinterest like social portal, that will hold and combine palettes of all members. The idea was to turn the whole thing into a social tool and take it to the next level, when the user can share and introduce the actual places / locations of his photos. Sort of magical combination of Trip Advisor with Pinterest.
