Project Goal
SpaceIL is a non-profit organization that strives to promote science and science education.
As a design team working on this fantastic volunteering project, we’re working closely with our dev teams and directly with Kfir Damari - one of the SpaceIL founders.
The project is to create a system connecting schools and kindergartens on one side and SpaceIL volunteer instructors on the other. To help SpaceIL spread science education for all the kids in Israel. We’re now also working on a dedicated mobile up for SpaceIL volunteer instructors.
Main requirements:
-
Intuitive and ease to use. Engaging and Graphic.
-
Managing lifecycle of instructors and lectures. Managing Volunteers. Activity and log of changes.
-
Admin abilities. Export/Import data. Reports and Insights.
-
Mobile friendly
-
Gamification
-
Low budget – SpaceIL is nonprofit organization
User Segmentation
I think it was a combination of all the basic segments out there -
It was a fair share of demographics (gender, age, of course - occupation), income and more. But it was also geographic based, since the lectures are based of physical location (country, city...)
And last but not least - the psychographic segmentation, when we are considering personal attitudes, values, interests, languages or personality traits.
It is a very specific field of interest, therefore the users are - as well as the instructors - are cherry picked.
My Contribution
It was a mutual effort, and we were a team of three designers, a product lead a two developers to support our vision.
My main job was to refine the main dashboard (desktop format) and then to create the mobile version for the online portal.
Part of the task was to build a brand library (fonts, colors, icons, infographic assets) and convey the new look and feel across the desktop & mobile platforms.
Main Challenges
The interface includes a lot of internal hierarchies that should co-exist together.
After all, the lectures are filtered according to the level of maturity and popularity, yet there is enough room and will for 'new blood' in the system.
At the same time, all the lecturers can freely populate a time slot and set their lectures accordingly.
In addition, the popular and "hot" lecturers are given credit and mini-incentives to give additional lectures. This reward program was very important to the client, and we were asked to intertwine it into the system.
And all of these must live in a very easy, plug-and-play, friendly environment, and be 100% approachable to all users.
