SAP Fiori Launchpad
Admin Platform • Responsive • App • Tablet • Online Site

Project Goal
SAP Fiori launchpad is the entry point to Fiori apps on mobile or desktop devices. The launchpad displays various tiles. Tiles are square or rectangular objects that provide access to applications. Which tiles are displayed on a user's entry page depends on the user's role. Depending on the role, the user can choose from a wide array of ready-to-use tiles from the tile catalog as part of the launchpad personalization.
SAP Fiori is a design system that enables you to create business apps with a consumer-grade user experience, turning casual users into SAP experts with simple screens that run on any device. This streamlined app uses tiles to encapsulate standard tasks, such as approving purchase requisitions, viewing sales orders, and approving timesheets.
My Contribution
I entered as a new designer in the company into this project when it already had a UX designer and a skilled development team. We worked in full collaboration, with me responsible for building the UI and the visual prototype of the interface.
Design is inline with SAP brand library guidelines - as request.
Main Challenges
1. First one would be the fact that SAP NetWeaver Gateway (that hosts the FLP) is a classic ABAP system. There is also a Java-based one that is hosted by SAP Portal, but the most popular one is ABAP). So we had to maintain another ABAP user management.
2. What happens once you wish to use FLP as a central point of access to non-SAP applications? Non-SAP users are not going to be a part of this trip.
3. You would also need to consider SAML-based SSO or other solution to access the FLP as you don’t want your users to remember new passwords, right?
4. It took me a while. to understand the real difference between SAP and Fiori, which comes down to the fact that Fiori is a design concept, and SAPUI5 is a library framework. You can still build custom UI5 Apps that do not adhere to the SAP Fiori design guidelines, but they are called custom UI5 Apps.
The main idea (and challenge) here was be able to roll out FLP later without any applicative changes, use theme editor to build your stylesheets once for all apps, and implement cross-app navigation to reuse business cases & respond to integration requirements.
