Project Goal

Smart home application, sometimes referred to as a home automation app or a smart home automation app, is an application used to remotely control and manage connected non-computing devices at home, typically from a smartphone or tablet.

The main objective of the functions is to improve the quality of life and convenience at home.

Other goals are greater security and more efficient use of energy thanks to connected, remote-controllable devices. Home appliances, such as the washing machine, lights or the coffee maker, can be time-controlled.

Top 5 features of a smart home system:

Advanced home network. You've probably heard of the “Internet of Things” by now

Remote access. When most people talk about smart homes, what they really mean is remote access to one's home systems

  Advanced security

  Lighting control, automated window treatments

  Distributed audio

User Segmentation

It was a mix of technographic segmentation - based on preferred technologies, software, and mobile devices, and behavioral segmentation – based on actions or inactions, spending/consumption habits, feature use, session frequency, browsing history, average order value, etc.

I had to study the psychographic aspect, based on personal attitudes, values, interests, or personality traits.

Part of the goal of the app was to make it work for the user, and not the other way around. I had to understand my audience and its habits.

My Contribution

The global smart home automation market is already as crowded as it can get. In order to find or build a successful application, you have to conduct a deep metrical examination, and be aware of every detail down the road.

After studying soup to nuts more than ten leading Smart Home apps, I got a much better understanding of the unique value they provide. This information most certainly helped me to make better decisions about my application, and the directions I would like to take it forward.

Competitors

No matter what area of your house you are thinking about, there are numerous smart-home devices and apps for that. But you can’t just pick a random one out of all those devices. No, you need the best one with the best smart-home experience.

Main Challenges

Oh SO many.

It. is a very saturated market, that changes and evolves every second.

The emergence of IoT came with the promise of endless possibilities, and smart homes are one of them. The ability to control different aspects of our homes remotely has made our lives easier.

One of the main challenges was to get an holistic view of how the Smart Home Automation even works.

After that I had to check if the development idea is valid.

Another big question mark was around the development, as I knew I need to build a smart home dashboard app which will enable ALL users to control their home automation system.
